My mother once quoted Mahatma Ghandi in a speech she gave at my school: ‘Educate one man, you educate one person, but educate a woman and you educate a whole civilisation’.
I would like to go one step further. ‘Educate the children, and you educate the world.’
The library project in Iga is intended to open up the world of possibilities for a community for whom poverty has placed opportunity singularly out of reach.
I firmly believe, that the only way that a community can be lifted out of its cycle of poverty, is by enabling and empowering it to lift itself, to reach for the impossible, and in so doing make the improbable achievable.
Education is the universal leveller. A good education is acquired by being able to sate a hunger for knowledge and exploration, in and outside of a classroom. A library is the perfect place.
